In August 2017 the painting Scotland’s Voices by Alexander (‘Sandy’) Moffat, MBE was unveiled in the Saltire Society Rooms, Edinburgh.
The painting imagines some of the influential singers, players and tradition bearers of the Scottish folk revival, assembled round the poet, folk song collector and pivotal figure of that revival, Hamish Henderson, deploying his trusty tape recorder.
Freelance writer Jim Gilchrist, in an article on the painting in The Scotsman Magazine, wrote:
”...there’s a case for a companion Scotland’s Voices compilation recording - a challenge perhaps, for a label such as Greentrax”.
The challenge was accepted by Greentrax and Jim Gilchrist agreed to help select the tracks and write the sleeve notes for such a compilation, while Sandy Moffat generously agreed to allow an image of the painting to be used as the front cover of the CD booklet.
