John Vesey
Biography
From the CD Booklet " Two Sligo Masters "
John Vesey, is in terms of style, unmistakably a Sligo fiddle player, and the selection of tunes he chooses here has also a strong regional bias. Eddie Cahill is a fine example of ols style flute playing, much more of a rarity these days than its counterpart on the fiddle, and his playing with its bounce and rhythm is like a wake-up call to those in danger of losing heart with life.
John Vesey and Eddie Cahill were major figures in Sligo music of the recent past. They are the very essence of what has become known as 'the Sligo style', a direct link with the great era of Sligo musicians who settled in America. Their musical careers follow the pattern of many before them; learning the music at its source in their native Sligo, taking it with them to America, adding the indelible imprint of that emigrant experience. In common with many other recordings from the past, it has a quality which reaches across time, clearly demonstrating that this is music which will long outlive its performers and has a freshness and appeal for each new generation.
