Biography

In the fall of 1999, John Cairns became the eleventh person ever and first person outside of Scotland to have won the Highland Society of London's Gold Medal in Piobaireachd at both the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban and the Northern Meeting in Inverness in the same year. During 1999 he also won the Livingstone Invitational competition and the Champipn Supreme Award for Light Music in Ontario.
On the road to success have been countless hours of practice and dedication to the art of piping and pipe bands. Tday, John is a member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders and prior to this he was a pipe major of the grade 1, St Thomas Pipe Band in Ontario.
Prior to 1999 John had won many special prizes such as the William Livingstone Contest in 1992, the Pipbaireachd Society Gold Medal ( Canada ) and the Gold Medal at Fergus in 1992,1993 & 1995.
In 1996 John won the North America Solo Piping Championship at Maxville exactly thirty years after his father had accomplished the same task. He won it again in 1998.
